Shopping in Bangkok

Where to shop in Bangkok — malls, markets, night markets, street shopping, and the best areas for fashion, souvenirs, electronics, and local finds.

Traditional Markets

The best place to start shopping like a local is at one of Bangkok's traditional markets. Chatuchak Weekend Market is the big one — over 15,000 stalls selling clothing, accessories, vintage items, plants, and local crafts, open Saturday and Sunday. Pak Khlong Talat, the flower market near the old city, is worth a visit even if you're not buying anything.

Floating Markets

Bangkok's floating markets are as much an experience as a shopping trip. Damnoen Saduak is the most famous — vendors sell fresh produce and street food from boats along the canal. It's touristy, but still worth seeing early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Taling Chan is smaller and more local-feeling at weekends.

Shopping Malls

Bangkok's malls are genuinely world-class. Terminal 21 is themed as an international airport terminal — each floor represents a different city — and has a good mix of local and international brands with a famously cheap food court. CentralWorld is one of Southeast Asia's largest malls. For luxury, Siam Paragon, EmQuartier, and ICONSIAM on the Thonglor riverside cover most bases.

Boutique Shopping

Siam Square, Thonglor, and Ari are the best areas for independent boutiques — bespoke clothing, handmade accessories, and local designer pieces. It takes more time to find things, but the quality and originality are generally higher than the markets.

Bargaining

At traditional markets, bargaining is expected. A reasonable opening offer is about 60–70% of the first asking price — then you meet somewhere in the middle. Smile, don't push too hard, and walk away if the price doesn't suit you. Prices at malls and boutiques are fixed and non-negotiable.

Practical Tips

Carry cash

Credit cards work at malls and larger stores, but smaller markets and street vendors typically only accept cash.

Dress appropriately

Dress modestly at traditional markets near religious sites. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended in the heat.

Stay hydrated

Bangkok's tropical climate is relentless — drink plenty of water and take shade breaks, especially at outdoor markets.

Watch for scams

Most vendors are honest, but stay alert for counterfeit goods and overly helpful strangers steering you to gem shops.

Learn a few Thai phrases

Basic phrases go a long way when haggling or asking directions. Locals respond warmly to any effort with the language.
