Bangkok Events and Festivals

Bangkok has events all year, but the big ones are seasonal. Songkran, Loy Krathong, Chinese New Year, design events, food events, concerts, markets, and New Year celebrations all change the feel of the city.

Always check current dates before planning around an event. Some festivals follow the lunar calendar, and some venues change programs each year.

Songkran

Songkran is Thai New Year, usually celebrated from April 13 to 15. In Bangkok, it can mean water fights, closed streets, parties, temple visits, and family rituals.

If you want the loud version, look at major nightlife and tourist areas. If you want the quieter side, visit temples such as Wat Pho or Wat Arun and watch how local families mark the holiday.

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong usually falls in November. People float small decorated baskets on water as a symbolic way to let go of bad luck and give thanks.

Parks, riverside hotels, and places along the Chao Phraya can be busy. Go early if you want photos without fighting the crowd.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is one of the best times to visit Yaowarat. Expect food, crowds, decorations, and heavy traffic around Chinatown.

It is atmospheric, but not relaxed. Wear comfortable shoes and use MRT where possible.

Food and shopping events

Bangkok has frequent food fairs, mall events, restaurant weeks, and pop-up markets. CentralWorld, ICONSIAM, EmQuartier, and other large malls often host seasonal programs.

These events are easy to add to a trip because they sit near shopping, restaurants, and transit.

Arts, design, and culture

Bangkok Design Week is one of the more useful creative events for visitors. It often spreads across several neighborhoods, including older riverside and creative districts.

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, galleries, and cultural venues also host changing exhibitions. Check listings close to your travel dates.

Music, sport, and nightlife

Concerts, club nights, Muay Thai fights, running events, and hotel parties happen throughout the year. Rajadamnern Stadium and Lumpinee Stadium are the classic places to look for Muay Thai.

For nightlife, check the venue directly. Bangkok clubs and rooftop bars can change lineups, dress codes, and opening patterns.

New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is big around CentralWorld, ICONSIAM, riverside hotels, and rooftop venues. Fireworks and countdown events draw large crowds.

Book dinner or hotel plans early. Getting home after midnight can take longer than expected.

My Bangkok advice

Plan around one main event per day. Bangkok crowds, heat, and traffic can make event-hopping tiring.

Use events as a way to understand the city, not just fill a schedule. The best moments are often in the side streets around the main attraction.
