Pak Khlong Talat
Bangkok's largest flower market operates around the clock, with the most spectacular displays of orchids, jasmine garlands, and roses after midnight.
Pak Khlong Talat is Bangkok’s oldest and largest flower market, and it never truly closes. During the day you will find a modest selection of stems and arrangements, but the real spectacle happens between midnight and dawn when trucks arrive from the provinces loaded with fresh-cut flowers. By 3 AM the narrow lanes are packed with vendors arranging towering displays of orchids, lotus buds, marigolds, roses, and the jasmine garlands (phuang malai) used for offerings at shrines across the city.
The market sits along the Chao Phraya River near Memorial Bridge, within walking distance of Wat Pho and the southern edge of the Rattanakosin district. MRT Sanam Chai is the nearest station. If you are night owls or jet-lagged, a 2 AM visit to the market followed by an early morning walk along the river as the sun comes up is one of Bangkok’s most memorable experiences. Prices for flowers are absurdly cheap compared to anywhere outside Thailand — huge bouquets of roses for 100–200 THB.
The market has shrunk somewhat in recent years as some vendors have been relocated, but the core area along Chak Phet Road remains active and photogenic. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet — the floors are perpetually damp from flower stems and cleaning. There are a few basic coffee stalls and noodle shops around the edges catering to the overnight workers, so you can grab a cheap meal while you are there.
