Bib Gourmand is Michelin’s award for very good food at moderate prices. In Bangkok, that mostly means noodle shops, seafood places, Yaowarat small eats, regional Thai cooking, and neighbourhood restaurants, the kind of meal you can fit into a normal day rather than plan the day around.
This guide currently tracks 38 Bib Gourmand restaurants. For tasting menus and destination dinners, use Michelin star restaurants in Bangkok, which lists every one-, two-, and three-star restaurant by tier.
Bib Gourmand versus Michelin stars
A Bib Gourmand is not a lower star. Michelin uses it to point at places where the cooking is very good and the price stays reasonable, and many of Bangkok’s Bib restaurants are shophouses or street-side kitchens that would never want a tasting-menu format.
The difference shows up in planning. Starred restaurants mean booking ahead, deposits, and a long sit-down meal. Bib Gourmand places usually mean checking opening days, arriving early, and accepting a queue.
What you will eat
- Noodles: Ten Suns, Kolun.h, No Name Noodle, Nai Ngieb, Gim Nguan Noodle, Rung Rueang Tung Pork Noodle, and Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu.
- Seafood: Ann Tha Din Daeng, Here Hai, Lucky Seafood, Kin Kub Koi, Chai, and Somsak Pu Ob.
- Thai-Chinese and small eats: Urai Braised Goose, Bokkia Tha Din Daeng, Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla, Hong Seng, Thai Tham, and Pae Brass Pot Porridge.
- Regional Thai: Southern Thai at Janhom and Beer Hima, Northern Thai at Maan Muang, and Isan cooking at Phed Phed Bistro.
- Thai restaurants: Krua Apsorn, Samlor, Plu, Prik-Yuak, Thai Niyom, and Jaan by Khun Jim, plus Vietnamese at Thien Duong.
Where they cluster
The old town is the easiest place to string several together. Banglamphu and Rattanakosin have Bunloet, Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu, Krua Apsorn, Ten Suns, K. Panich, Kolun.h, and Thai Tham within a short ride of each other.
Yaowarat adds Ann Tha Din Daeng, Bokkia Tha Din Daeng, and Urai Braised Goose, and works well as an evening food walk. Sathorn and Silom have Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla, Plu, Jaan by Khun Jim, Aunglo by Yangrak, and Thien Duong for a weekday lunch near the business district.
Practical tips
Check opening days before crossing the city. Small Bib Gourmand places can close one day a week, keep short hours, or sell out early.
Expect queues at the famous names, especially at weekend lunch. Arriving at opening time is usually easier than trying to book.
Moderate price does not always mean street-food price. Seafood places in particular can run up a bill quickly once you add crab or whole fish.
My Bangkok advice
Treat the Bib list as a map of very good everyday cooking, not a checklist. Pick two or three in the same neighbourhood, go hungry, and leave room for whatever looks good on the walk between them.
