Khlong San District

Khlong San covers 6.051 square kilometres on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya and had 73,263 registered residents in 2017. Its four khwaeng are Somdet Chao Phraya, Khlong San, Bang Lamphu Lang and Khlong Ton Sai. New riverfront towers and ICONSIAM are its most visible landmarks, but older communities, temples, markets, hospitals and residential streets continue inland from the water.

District and area names

Use the Khlong San area guide for street-level decisions around the older neighbourhood, local markets, and river access. Charoen Nakhon covers the long riverside road, condo corridor, hotels, and ICONSIAM surroundings.

Those practical areas sit inside the wider administrative district. Somdet Chao Phraya and Khlong San are the two compact northern khwaeng. Bang Lamphu Lang and Khlong Ton Sai extend farther south around Charoen Nakhon and the rail corridor. Neither an area nor a district label guarantees that an address is immediately beside the river or a station.

The district grew around canals that once crossed orchards. Several were later filled or converted into roads, including parts of the routes now known as Lat Ya and Somdet Chao Phraya. Khlong San was also the original Bangkok terminus of the Maeklong Railway before services were cut back to Wongwian Yai in 1961. That history helps explain the mix of narrow local streets, old commercial communities and newer transport infrastructure.

River, rail and road

ICONSIAM is both a destination and a transport landmark. It combines mall shopping, restaurants, indoor attractions, events, and river views. The surrounding waterfront has encouraged new hotels and residences, but walking conditions become more local and fragmented only a few streets away.

The river is part of daily transport here. Public ferries, cross-river boats and hotel services use different piers and operating patterns, so confirm the service before boarding.

Charoen Nakhon station serves ICONSIAM on the short Gold Line. The line connects at Krung Thon Buri BTS for Silom Line trains toward Saphan Taksin, Silom, and central Bangkok.

Khlong San suits travellers who want river atmosphere or ICONSIAM access, and residents whose routines align with the river, Silom Line or Thonburi side. The Gold Line does not remove every last-mile problem: some homes and restaurants remain far from the elevated route, while Charoen Nakhon can be congested. For a hotel, verify the evening return after boat services reduce. For a home, compare groceries, school or office travel and cross-river alternatives before choosing on the river view alone.
