Wat Arun

The Temple of Dawn with its towering porcelain-encrusted spire is one of Bangkok's most photogenic landmarks on the Thonburi riverside.

Category: temple

District: Bangkok Yai district in Bangkok

Wat Arun looks stunning from across the river but up close it is even more interesting. The central prang (Khmer-style tower) is covered in thousands of fragments of Chinese porcelain and coloured glass that were originally brought over as ballast in trading ships. You can climb partway up the steep steps for a view over the Chao Phraya River — the stairs are genuinely steep and narrow, so wear shoes with grip and take your time.

The easiest way to get here is by the cross-river ferry from Tha Tien pier near Wat Pho. The boat ride takes about three minutes and costs a few baht. Most visitors combine Wat Arun with the Grand Palace and Wat Pho in a single morning trip around Rattanakosin. If you are coming independently, the temple is on the Thonburi side of the river and not well served by BTS or MRT, so the ferry is genuinely the best option.

For photographs, the golden-hour light hitting the spire from across the river at sunset is the classic shot — take it from the Maharaj pier or any riverside restaurant on the Phra Nakhon side. If you want to photograph the temple itself without crowds, arrive right when it opens at 8 AM. The grounds are compact so you only need about 45 minutes to explore properly.
