Khao San Road

Bangkok's legendary backpacker strip, a chaotic 400-metre stretch of cheap eats, bars, market stalls, and nonstop street energy day and night.

Category: landmark

District: Phra Nakhon

Area: Khao San Road

Khao San Road has been the epicentre of Bangkok’s backpacker scene since the 1980s and shows no signs of slowing down. The 400-metre strip packs in guesthouses, bars, massage shops, tattoo parlours, street food carts, and vendors selling everything from fake IDs to fried scorpions. It is loud, chaotic, and relentlessly commercial — but there is an undeniable energy to the place, especially after dark when the bars crank up the music and the street fills with people from every corner of the world.

The street food along Khao San and the parallel Rambuttri Road is decent and cheap. Pad thai from the cart vendors runs 50–60 THB, fresh fruit shakes 30–40 THB, and there are reliable sit-down restaurants on Rambuttri if you want to escape the noise. The surrounding Banglamphu neighbourhood is far more interesting than Khao San itself — walk five minutes in any direction and you will find quiet canal-side streets, old shophouses, and local restaurants where prices drop by half.

Getting to Khao San has historically been its biggest drawback — there is no BTS or MRT station within walking distance. The most common options are taxi, tuk-tuk, or the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Phra Athit pier followed by a 10-minute walk. The area around Khao San is within walking distance of the Grand Palace and the Rattanakosin historical zone, making it easy to combine sightseeing and nightlife in one area. Be aware that drink prices on the main strip are inflated compared to the rest of Bangkok.
