Jay Fai holds one Michelin star in the Michelin Guide Bangkok — a distinction it has held since the Guide’s debut Thailand edition, and one of the most discussed Michelin awards in the world. The restaurant is a shophouse on Mahachai Road in Pom Prap Sattru Phai, on the old-city side of Bangkok near Banglamphu and Khao San Road. Supinya Junsuta — known universally as “Jay Fai” — cooks every dish herself, solo, over charcoal flames, wearing the distinctive ski goggles that have become her signature.

Jay Fai cuisine and style

Jay Fai’s menu is short and focused. The signature dish is the crab omelet (Khrua Phoo): a delicate shell of fried egg filled with large chunks of fresh crab meat, cooked to a crisp on the outside and soft within. Other highlights include crab curry and pad kee mao (drunken noodles) loaded with seafood. The cooking is Thai street food at the highest technical level — Jay Fai has been perfecting these dishes for decades.

This is not fine dining in the conventional sense. You sit on plastic chairs, the kitchen is open to the street, and the atmosphere is distinctly casual. The prices, however, reflect the ingredient quality: expect 1,500–3,000 THB per person. Crab is expensive, and Jay Fai uses a lot of it.

Jay Fai is a Michelin star that makes sense on its own terms. The food is genuinely exceptional — the crab omelet in particular is one of Bangkok’s best individual dishes regardless of category. The setting is part of the experience: a small shophouse run by a single cook who has no sous chef, no prep team visible, and no concessions to restaurant convention.

It has been featured in multiple Netflix productions and international media, which means it is now very well known. Manage expectations accordingly: expect a wait, and book ahead if possible.

Jay Fai is on Mahachai Road in Pom Prap Sattru Phai, in Bangkok’s old town. Nearest MRT stations are Sam Yot and Hua Lamphong. It is a short walk from Khao San Road and the Democracy Monument area.

When to go

Closed Monday, Tuesday, and Sunday. Opens in the evening (around 3–5 PM) and serves until the food runs out. Book via phone or arrive early — demand is very high and Jay Fai stops taking new customers once she has reached her capacity for the evening.
