Siriraj Hospital is Thailand’s oldest and largest hospital, a major public teaching hospital attached to Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine. It sits on the Chao Phraya riverfront in Bangkok Noi on the Thonburi side.
The hospital handles an enormous volume of complex cases — many serious conditions that cannot be treated at provincial hospitals are referred to Siriraj. Its specialist departments in neurology, cardiology, oncology, and rare disease management are among the most experienced in the country.
Costs are significantly lower than private hospitals, which is one of the main reasons patients from across Thailand seek treatment here. The trade-off is wait times, which can be long, and navigation is harder for non-Thai speakers. Bringing a Thai-speaking companion for appointments is strongly recommended.
Accessibility from central Bangkok has improved with the MRT Blue Line extension to Itsaraphap, and river boats from Sathorn Pier or Central Pier can drop passengers at the hospital’s own pier.
Siriraj is a practical option for expats who speak Thai, have a Thai-speaking helper, or are seeking specialist treatment not available or affordable at private hospitals.
