Choose Ekkamai when you want a slightly calmer start, a dinner-led night around Sukhumvit 63, or a base closer to Gateway Ekkamai, Phra Khanong, or east-side hotels.

Many venue lists combine the two areas because that is how people actually use them. A night can start at Ekkamai, move into Thonglor, then finish with late food nearby. The mistake is assuming the walk between every mapped point will be pleasant. Bangkok traffic, rain, heat, and narrow sidewalks make short map distances feel longer at night.

Upper Sukhumvit is one of Bangkok’s strongest cocktail-bar areas. Places such as J. Boroski are part of why visitors associate Thonglor and Ekkamai with serious drinks rather than only big clubs or tourist bars.

Use named venues as anchors, not as a checklist. Check current opening hours, booking rules, dress codes, and prices before you go. The better version of this night is usually one dinner and one or two good bars, not five rushed stops.

If you want cheaper drinks, look for casual restaurants, beer bars, and relaxed local-expat spots rather than the most famous cocktail rooms. Thonglor and Ekkamai can be fun, but they are not the cheapest nightlife areas in Bangkok.

Dinner before drinks

This is one of the best parts of Bangkok for planning the meal first. Choose the restaurant, then choose the bar nearby.

That keeps the night tighter and avoids the common mistake of crossing back and forth between Sukhumvit 55, Sukhumvit 63, and side streets that look close on a map but are awkward after dark.

Getting around the area

Thonglor BTS and Ekkamai BTS are useful because they get you onto upper Sukhumvit without sitting in traffic first. After that, be realistic.

For short hops inside the sois, a motorbike taxi can be useful if you are comfortable with Bangkok traffic and sober enough to make a clear decision. For longer moves, use a taxi or ride-hailing car. If pickup points are blocked, walk to a clearer main-road spot rather than waiting in the middle of a crowded soi.

Do not plan a long late-night walk between Thonglor and Ekkamai unless the route is obvious, busy, and comfortable.

Asok is better if BTS-MRT interchange access matters or your group is meeting from different parts of Bangkok.
