Yan Nawa District

Yan Nawa covers 16.662 square kilometres around Rama III Road and a long eastern-bank bend of the Chao Phraya. Its two khwaeng are Chong Nonsi and Bang Phongphang, and the district had 78,797 registered residents in 2017. Offices, condominiums, older communities, schools, warehouses, temples and restaurants are spread along a corridor rather than concentrated around one centre.

A name with shifting boundaries

The district was historically called Ban Thawai, reflecting settlement by people from Tavoy. It was renamed Yan Nawa in 1939, following the name adopted by Wat Yan Nawa. Boundary changes in 1989 created Sathon and Bang Kho Laem, leaving the namesake temple in today’s Sathon district. A venue called “Yannawa” may therefore refer to the Yan Nawa khwaeng in Sathon or the modern Yan Nawa district farther south.

Chong Nonsi covers much of the inland side around Sathu Pradit and Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. Bang Phongphang follows the longer eastern river bend. Central Rama 3 is the main mall and daily-service anchor in Chong Nonsi. Wat Pariwat sits beside Rama III Road in Bang Phongphang.

Rama III travel

Yan Nawa has no BTS or MRT station inside its core in the current WhyBangkok transport network. BRT, buses, taxis, motorcycles and private vehicles serve different parts of Rama III. Rail stations in Sathon can help only after a road connection, and riverfront compounds do not all have public piers.

Rama IX Bridge and Bhumibol Bridge are major road connections, but their approaches can slow local journeys. Confirm the correct side of divided roads and the entrance to a riverfront development before setting out.

The district’s destination restaurants include Clara, Sühring and Savelberg, which should be planned as separate reservations rather than a walking food strip. Yan Nawa suits residents and workers tied to Rama III, Sathon or the southern river corridor; visitors should choose it for a specific meal, temple, mall or riverside address.
