Eastern Thailand is one of the easiest getaway regions from Bangkok. It works for beaches, islands, seafood, short road trips, and quick breaks from the city.
For a simple weekend, look at Pattaya, Bang Saen, Rayong, Koh Samet, or Chanthaburi. For Koh Chang, Koh Kood, or Koh Mak, give yourself more time.
Pattaya and Jomtien
Pattaya is the easiest major beach-city trip from Bangkok. It has hotels, restaurants, nightlife, malls, family attractions, and quick transport links.
It is not the quietest beach escape. Jomtien is usually calmer than central Pattaya and can be better for families or slower weekends.
Bang Saen and Chonburi
Bang Saen is closer to Bangkok and feels more local than Pattaya. It works for seafood, a short beach walk, and a low-effort day or overnight trip.
Chonburi also has family attractions and coastal stops, but check travel times. Weekend traffic can be heavy.
Rayong and Koh Samet
Rayong is useful for seafood, quieter beaches, and access to Koh Samet. Koh Samet is one of the easiest island trips from Bangkok.
Samet works well for a two-night beach break. Book ahead on weekends and holidays, because the island can fill quickly.
Chanthaburi
Chanthaburi is better for food, old-town walking, riverside stays, fruit, and a slower local feel. It is a good choice if you want more than a beach.
It suits travellers who like markets, cafes, history, and nature nearby.
Trat, Koh Chang, Koh Kood, and Koh Mak
Trat is the gateway to several eastern islands. Koh Chang is the most developed of the group, while Koh Kood and Koh Mak feel quieter.
These islands are better for long weekends or longer trips. Transfers take time, and ferry schedules matter.
Border and inland trips
Some eastern routes head toward the Cambodian border or inland historical sites. These are more specialist trips.
For most Bangkok visitors, they make more sense when paired with a longer itinerary rather than a short weekend.
Getting there
Private car, bus, van, and arranged transfers are common. For islands, build the ferry into your timing.
Do not plan the last ferry too tightly. Bangkok traffic and holiday crowds can add stress.
My Bangkok advice
For an easy first eastern trip, choose Koh Samet or Chanthaburi. For convenience and nightlife, choose Pattaya or Jomtien.
For a real island reset, save Koh Chang, Koh Kood, or Koh Mak for when you have enough time to travel without rushing.
