Lumphini Park

Bangkok's largest central park with jogging paths, paddle boats, and resident monitor lizards — a green escape in the middle of the business district.

Category: park

District: Pathum Wan district in Bangkok

Area: Silom

Lumphini Park is 142 acres of green space surrounded by skyscrapers and is the closest thing Bangkok has to a Central Park. Early mornings see Thai aunties doing tai chi, joggers circling the 2.5-kilometre loop, and office workers cutting through on their way to Silom and Sathorn. By mid-morning the park quiets down before picking up again in the late afternoon when the heat drops. The large lake in the centre has paddle boats for rent, and the paths are flat and well-maintained.

The park is famous for its population of large Asian water monitor lizards that live in and around the lake. They are impressive — some over a metre long — and completely unbothered by people. They are not dangerous if you leave them alone, but do not try to feed them or get too close for a selfie. You will spot them sunning on the banks or swimming through the water without even trying.

Access is easy from MRT Lumphini or MRT Silom stations, both within a short walk of the park gates. There are basic food vendors and drink stalls near the entrances, but no cafes inside the park itself. The park closes promptly at 9 PM and guards will usher everyone out. If you are a runner, the soft evening light between 5 and 6 PM is the best time — the temperature drops to something manageable and the path is well-lit.
