Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
Bangkok's most iconic luxury hotel, set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River since 1876 with legendary service and world-class dining.
The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is widely regarded as one of the finest hotels in the world, with a heritage stretching back to 1876 — making it the oldest luxury hotel in Thailand. It occupies a prime position on the Chao Phraya River in the Charoen Krung area of Bang Rak district, with free shuttle boats connecting guests to the BTS Skytrain at Saphan Taksin.
The hotel is spread across two wings connected by a riverside walkway. The Authors’ Wing (the original building) houses the famous Authors’ Lounge where writers including Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, and Noël Coward once stayed. The River Wing contains the majority of guest rooms, all with river views. Suites in the Authors’ Wing are the most coveted, though even the standard rooms in the River Wing are spacious by Bangkok standards.
Dining is a major draw. Le Normandie is one of Bangkok’s most celebrated fine restaurants, while Lord Jim’s serves excellent seafood by the river. The Sala Rim Naam, set across the river in a traditional Thai pavilion, offers a classical Thai dinner and dance experience. Afternoon tea at the Authors’ Lounge is a Bangkok institution — book well ahead on weekends.
The Oriental Spa, located across the river in a beautifully restored teak building, consistently ranks among the best hotel spas in Asia. Treatments blend traditional Thai techniques with modern wellness practices. The hotel also runs a respected Thai cooking school from its riverside facility.
Room rates start from around 12,000–15,000 THB per night for a Deluxe room, rising significantly for suites and the Authors’ Suites. For a special occasion stay in Bangkok, the Mandarin Oriental remains the benchmark against which all others are measured.
